Dancing Through The Years

Way back year two thousand and two was the year I entered the world of dance and since then, my life became extraordinary and more meaningful. For me, dancing is not just an exercise that needs to be done nor a talent that needs to be expressed rather I see dancing as the communication of my body and soul and as an expression of my deep feelings.

At the age of 5, I started taking dance classes at Lillibeth C. Trinidad School of Dance and Arts (LCTSDA). (You should take dance classes there!). Ballet was my first dance class and I was trained by Ma'am Lillibeth Santos. Following the Australian Conservatoire of Ballet method, I started as a pre-primary student who wears pink leotards, skirt, and tights.

During that time, I was the little girl who is always first in line 'coz I'm the shortest;

"Umbrella"

the little girl who hides under the barre just to watch others dance; the little girl who changes her pose at the last count of the solo/group shot and after it, you will hear a line saying.. "ULEEEEEEEEEEET!! Si Kathleen nagtaas ng paa!" Hahaha! Priceless moments. I was really the most disruptive that time. ;D

"Tiny Tutu Tots"
This was my first dance performed on stage.
"Sunflower Dance"
And most of all, I'm the little girl who dreams for a higher level and hard routines. ;)

April 2007, I had my first ACB (Australian Conservatoire of Ballet) examination in Preparatory Level 1 at Saint Paul College Pasig, Manila examined by Ms. Christine Walsh, AM, a former ballerina. Yes, we, ballet dancers, must also take exams and pass it for us to move in the next level . ;) What kind of exam? We dance different types of exercise such as plies, tendus, allegro, adage, and others. Also, vocabulary. We are asked to give the meaning of the word that she will ask and show her how it is. A month after the exam.. Finally! I saw my result, Distinction. The following exams I had were Level 1, 2,3 (Examined by Ms. Valmai Roberts), and 4. From my first exam up to the last, I received the same result! Thank you Lord for the blessing!

I lost my Pre-Level 1 certificate. The thing I hate about exams is when it comes to the result. You must be patient coz it will take a long time before it is released.

Here's a sample dance in our exam. This is Level 4 already: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=214831415195993&set=vb.100000074085342&type=3&theater

Receiving a result of Distinction  is one of the great achievements I had since it is the highest grade. It is the only grade that comes with a medal. And because of that, I make my parents proud. ;)

Year 2008, we competed in the 2009 Association of Ballet Academies Philippines (ABAP) Dance Cup at the Meralco Theater. Unfortunately, we didn't take home the trophy but still we can say we're winners because we became part of the competition. ;)

We always participate in ABAP Danseries. It is held in Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Manila, Meralco Theater, Tanghalang Pasigueno or other theaters. We performed once near Luneta Park, in Resorts World Manila, in MOA, NE Pacific Mall, Marquee Mall, and other places and events.

YEAR 2009

The 2009 Julian Felipe Competition was the next competition we had performing Wind Beneath My Wings  choreographed by Ma'am Lillibeth Santos and You Raise Me Up  by Sir Brezshnev Larlar. By that time, the title is ours. ;)

Another highlight I had in this year is the Hong Kong Ballet Study Tour. We stayed in HK for 5 days and 4 nights at Disney's Hollywood Hotel. Delegates are from different ballet school here in the Philippines. We took classes from different dance school in HK with different types of dance such as ballet, jazz, contemporary, and chinese dance. This was an opportunity that I grabbed immediately. ;)

YEAR 2010

One of the most memorable recital I had was our summer recital year 2010. It presents "Pinoy Ako!" featuring excerpts from The Sleeping Beauty. The unexpected part of this summer is when the Princess Aurora Variation  was given to me. It was my first solo dance and variation at the age of 14. I was Princess Aurora. ;)

PRINCESS AURORA:

JEWELS. I'm wearing an apple green tutu. ;)

Another is our BORACAY SHOWCASE 2010 which happened on Discovery Shores, Boracay. This time, it isn't ballet that we performed rather Hawaiian and Tahitian ;) Too bad I still can't upload the videos. Here's one dance that we performed in NE Mall, also in bora. ;)

Being enrolled in a dance school is not just about attending classes. It's also making a tight bond with each other. :)

Some people says that I'm not a good dancer coz I have big legs and thighs. Well for me, to be a great dancer, you don't just need to have the physical requirements. What you need more is the heart of a passionate dancer. So dancers who are having the same situation like mine, don't let your dreams be hindered just because you don't have the requirements or because of other people's judgement. Always inspire your self with the saying: "You have to believe you can reach the stars before you can actually touch one of them."

This was during the Grand Masquerade Ballet at Resorts World Manila. We performed Raymonda and MMK. ;)

"Maalaala Mo Kaya"
I could say that this dance is the most emotional dance we had ever performed! You know why? It's because while we're dancing.. we're crying :) We were getting those goosebumps as they say! Haha! ;)

ANAK:

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

"It must be said that Kat did not just earn these rewards through her god-given balletic body type and a brain that catches the technique and steps in an instant; she also has the heart of a patient and passionate dancer. She learned also that dance is more than just learning the pointes and stretches; it is  also about self-discipline, confidence and character. There's no stopping this girl from becoming the best dancer she could be."

"Kathleen danced with confidence and a lovely dance quality."
-Ms. Valmai S. Roberts

So there you have it! These are just highlights of my years in dancing. Thanks for dropping by to read! ;)
